Foliage Type: leaf Arrangement: basal, whorled

Distinguishing features:

  • height - 8 to 24 inches tall
  • leaves and stem very hairy
  • leaves - 2 to 5 incles long, oblong
  • flowers - occur in a cluster at the top of the stalk
  • very common along roadsides or disturbed and exposed areas

Habitats:

  • dry mesic sites
  • mesic sites

Ecological Value:

  • grouse and wild turkey feed on leaves and seeds
  • rabbits feed on the leaves
  • deer may browse the plants
