United Nations Year of Travel

Introduction

The United Nations will be endorsing one country as the "preferred country "for the International Year of Travel. This would give not only your country a great deal of free advertising but you region would also have a boost in the economy. It is you job a minister to gather information and present your data to the General Assembly of the UN who will vote for only one country to endorse. It is you job as minister to gather information, develop a campaign style fact sheet, and deliver a presentation to the UN General Assembly to sway the members that your country/region has the most to offer as the Preferred country for the International Year of Travel .

Task

The task is to decide which country/region is the best. To do this, each group will have three (3) ministers who will compile that date, design the fact sheet and the presentation to the General Assembly. Group must remember that the General Assembly is a very busy legislative body and should time themselves to 3 - 5 minuets per minister. Each minister will self evaluate their data. The group will evaluate each member and the General Assembly will rate the group. Finally, the General Assembly will vote on the one country as the UN Preferred Country. Using the fact sheet, each member will justify their vote to the Secretary General. This will be used to help other countries know why the member's voted the way they did. The individual component should take 1 - 1 1/2 class periods, the group component 2 classroom periods and the presentation 3 classroom periods. Total 6 class meetings

Process

  1. The class will be randomly selected into groups of three.
  2. Each group will select a region card. From the region card, they will select a country in the region to represent
  3. The group members will become one of the three minister; Minister of Place, Minister of Environment and Minister of Movement.
  4. Each minister has specific data to search. They will answer the questions for their ministry. They will be shown by the librarian the different materials that can be used in their query.
  5. When the individual data has been compiled, the three ministers will meet to design their fact sheet and how to present their country to the General Assembly. They will be introduced to HyperStudio stack, poster presentation or perform a commercial/advertisement. When they decide the presentation style, they will work in the appropriate lab.
